The Power of the Flower: Bring Your Home to Life with Flower Arrangements

Flowers are the one ingredient besides people that make a home feel ALIVE.

Have you ever walked into a room that was graciously furnished and perfectly decorated but…missing something? Maybe it felt unlived-in, like a stage set instead of a home where people live and love. On the other hand, there are homes that feel welcoming the instant you cross the threshold. They look pulled together, but they also feel warm, dynamic, and lived-in.

For me, one of best ways to add life to the home is flowers. Fresh flowers create instant beauty with very little effort. Just like that, they move a space from “staged” into “living.” And if you are living full-tilt with kids, they add graciousness alongside the inevitable little messes of life. Quite simply, flowers are the fastest way to make a home feel pulled together without “finishing” anything.

Because a welcoming home isn’t just decorated…it’s alive.

Flowers for Home Decor

I’ve said before that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to express yourself with home décor. For example, I love to scout out antique-store finds like a classic living room chair that just needs reupholstering.

Raising and homeschooling seven kids, I also have always opted for furniture and décor that can accommodate lots of living. Flowers are a way to create vivid, timeless beauty without worrying about, for example, an expensive vase getting jostled by running kids and pets. In fact, flowers and greenery shine in even the humblest containers.

I often have unannounced visitors at my home. That means I haven’t had time to “clean up” everything. I may be really in a “living moment” doing laundry, creating a meal, or working through a stack of paperwork when the doorbell rings. But if I have fresh flowers on my long dining table and strategically placed around the foyer, kitchen and den, the house looks put together, maintained.

Flowers for Mood and Well-Being

There is a good reason that flowers are the gift of choice for people who are in the hospital. Flowers are proven to elevate our moods and give us a sense of well-being. They reduce stress and anxiety, lowers cortisol levels, and even can improve recovery times and blood pressure in hospital patients.

Around holiday time, flower arrangements are a wonderful way to get your home and yourself into the spirit. One year, we missed our window to get a Christmas tree. I know. I know. But life happened. So I settled on getting red and white flowers of every kind and intermingling green limbs and branches from the yard in beautiful, and not so beautiful, vases. No one even noticed the less-than-lovely holders. The house looked and felt like Christmas.

Flowers elevate the space and make it even more special that it already is.

How to Get Started with Flowers at Home

You don’t need a florist’s studio to get started with flower arranging, and you certainly don’t need a lot of money. I forage in our yard for flowers and foliage all the time. In fact, greenery from the yard works great even if no flowers are in the vases.

Additionally, you may be able to get flower arrangements for free. Often, churches are happy to give you the flowers after weekend weddings. They will be throwing them away anyway to clean up for church on Sunday. Just ask the custodian of the church, and you may find yourself going home with a carful of lovely blooms.

For the arranging part, you just need a few basics:

  • A vessel (vase, mason jar, pitcher, or bowl)
  • Sharp scissors or garden shears
  • Fresh flowers and/or greenery
  • Clean water
  • Optional: floral tape, a flower frog (a weighted base with holes to hold the stems at bottom of vessel), or chicken wire for structure
  • A little creativity and the simple tips below

That’s it. Truly.

10 Simple Tips for Beautiful Flower Arranging

Here are ten tips to ensure vibrant, living arrangements that brighten your home.

1. Mix Florist Flowers with Foraged Greenery and Blooms

One of the easiest ways to elevate a bouquet is to combine a florist’s flowers with greenery or blooms from your yard. The foraged plants add texture, movement, and a natural, gathered feel.

And sometimes? Just greenery alone is enough. A few branches can be quietly stunning.

2. Arrange the Greenery First

Greenery gives your floral arrangement its shape and holds up the flowers. The flowers give then add color and more structure.

3. Use Odd Numbers of Flowers

Just play this by ear, but on average, an odd number gives a floral arrangement an informal appeal. It will make it feel more about the heart.

4. Vary the Heights of the Greenery and Flowers

Flowers peering out of the foliage a little deeper in the vase than others give depth to the arrangement. It feels effortless, gives curiosity and movement.

5. Don’t Crowd the Vase

Empty space is sometimes a good thing. You want to make sure you can see the beauty in all the flowers or foliage.

6. Trim Stems at an Angle

Cut the plant stems at a 45-degree angle. This will help them last longer and take in more water.

7. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line

Leaves in water cause bacteria to grow. When that happens, your water will become very murky very quickly, and you will have to change it out.

8. Think in Layers

Think of arranging flowers in terms of getting dressed. You put on your main outfit, add accessories, and then layer on the outer pieces. So start with greenery, add flowers, and then fill in any bare areas with lighter flowers or foliage.

9. Turn the Flower Arrangement as You Work

To make sure the arrangement looks great from every side, be sure to turn it as you work and adjust any bare or crowded spots.

10. Let It Be Imperfect!

Flower arranging should be a fun creative outlet, not a chore. The most beautiful arrangements are ones that aren’t over styled or fussed over—instead, they feel natural. My granny used to bring a bunch of azaleas inside and put them in a mason jar. That’s it. It was stunning. Now, I do the same.

Extra Tip: Arrange flowers with your kids and grandkids. You will pass on the joy for generations.
