10 Meals for New Moms
Meals for new moms is a very important topic for me right now. I became a “Big Mama” (a.k.a. grandmama) a week ago! During my daughter-in-law Becca’s pregnancy, I shared the “it’s a girl” grandbaby reveal with you all. Now I’m thrilled to share baby Flora’s arrival. What a delight she is! I still have a house full of kids and now a new grandbaby, so life has been chaotic but great.
What are the best ways to help new moms?
After having seven children of my own, you would think I would know exactly how to help a new mom during this beautiful but tiring time. I had a pretty good idea, but I felt the need to ask several older ladies and a few new mothers just to make sure I was on the right track.
Without a doubt, all of them agreed that meal prep for new moms is at the top of the list. There is no need to shower them with gifts. The new mama has already received the greatest gift: that newborn baby! But do bake a casserole or make a comforting meatloaf or pot of chili.
Never underestimate the power of comfort food! Postpartum freezer meals are also a godsend. Slow cooker / crock pot or instant pot meals are great, though most of the recipes below are easy to cook up on the stove and in the oven.
After meals, here are the next items on the list for new moms: help get the laundry done and keep the baby for periods of time to allow the new mom and dad time to sleep. Giving Becca and Forrest that much-needed time to rest is our family’s mission right now!
What’s a good meal to take to a new mom?
As far as the food goes, Becca has been craving soups of all kinds. I’m trying to keep the soups stocked for her as well as give a little heavier sustenance to my son! I’ll make 2 recipes of the protein and use one for the soup and the other for stand-alone protein dishes. Then I’ll add a few hearty sides to go with the meal.
Here are a few meals that the new parents were happy to receive. The great thing is they are pretty easy recipes, so I can make a triple batch and get my household’s food on the table, too. On the other hand, I can make a heavier version for the family alongside what I make for Becca and Forrest.
