River Reclaimed Sinker Cypress Serving Platter
The amazing wood hand chosen and hand hewn for this platter is River Reclaimed Sinker Cypress recovered from the Alabama River. The Southern coastal region has been blessed with this slow growing trees which create tight rings resulting in sturdy wood. By the way, my entire house is made from cypress.
During the massive growth in the deep South during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, these handout timbers often time sank to the bottom of rivers during transit. These underwater logs are called “sinkers” or “deadheads.”
While the logs lay at the bottom of rivers, the colors and shading within the logs become a one-of-a-kind work of art in that the minerals from the bottom of the lakes and rivers seep into the wood resulting in variations between logs. I love the fact that we can preserve our forests by using river reclaimed wood. This piece is approximately 16 x 8 1/2 inches.
