How to Bake Bread in an Earthen Oven

Earthen Oven Part III-Making Bread

I have been cooking like mad in my earthen oven and want to share with you one of my very favorite breads to cook in it. I was lucky enough to get to show my bread making on television on the Venture Outdoor TV Show with Don Day and Curt Gannt.

I want to show that making bread is fun, easy, and doable to the home cook and can be done with minimal frustration. It does take a while for the different steps to get complete, but actual “in the kitchen” time is really very little.

Of course you do not have to have an earthen oven to cook this incredible Italian Rustic Bread, but to me the flavor is just…well, simply better.

If you are cooking this in your home oven, put it in the oven at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes then turn off the oven and let it stay in the oven with the door closed for another 10 minutes. When you remove the bread, it should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
